Beautiful rifle. I like original guns, but I would gladly buy one skillfully modified. Of course, my eyes are shot, and the sight would be a big help

No Expert. Are there any stampings on the tang of the buttplate ? Is the buttplate brass or steel ? Might be Austrian or German. Check out Firepower from Abroad, might have the information you need, Cal. 69 ??

IMHO. This book is worth having, as the information is accurate and covers just about all milsurp. bolt guns with great photos

NO EXPERT. Good advice from other posters. As it sits, it is a very handsome rifle. Around here in that configuration maybe 400.00 or so. To restore it, stock, handgaurd, band. etc. etc. it would be quite a bit more. It would be a fun gun to work up a good load for. But, if it feels good, do it

No EXPERT No family connection, cut up,mismatched numbers, bent bolt, Sell it, The Savage 788 is a fine rifle, and .243 a great caliber .
