How do I index both front and rear sights on a Spanish 1916 short rifle before soldering?

the way I did this on my 1916 carbine , bought the thinest copper wire in could fine , ran it down barrel and over top of receiver center and down to end of barrel with sights not soldered in place , mark with a witness mark on outside the receiver and barrel where they meet , center , your eyes will tell you when its perfect, then same on front site/ barrel and twist the wire together , the wire will lay in rear site groove and lay on top of front sight with a little pressure , sounds stupid , but it work on 1916 and a G98 and 98K that were badly headspace by a "gunsmith" , it seemed to be that the eyes can really tell if its straight or not

Should the rear sight base be all the way back against the receiver ring?

If you have a upper hand guard to use as a guide , if not ,I will go dig it out and measure it for you
