I was looking over at Gunboards French Firearms Forum when I came across this thread: http://www.gunboards.com/forums/topic.a ... _ID=231667

French 24/29LMG magazines can be altered to fit and you get 25 rounds.

There was someone in Arkansas making them at some point. Basically you drill out the rivets on a 49/56 Magazine, pop off the catch, and then attatch it to the 24/29 LMG Mag.

IMA is selling the 24/29 magazines at $5 each. I just ordered 8.

It's not that easy, you will have to rework the lips of the mag, adapt the back of the mag to the shape of the 49-56 hold open, adapt the back end of the follower too.

It is easier to weld together two 10 shot mags:

Or if you are really into large capacity, try to locate 35 round mags for the Reibel LMG they are a bit cumbersome but easier to adapt than the 24/29 mags:

Damn, Kelt! That's a downer! The order for 8 of the 24/29 mags has already shipped. That's what I get for believing what I read on the Net.
I guess I'll be on here describing what contortions I had to go through to get these to work. I'll even take pictures.

That is a really nice rifle you have there.

The 35 round magazines are collectors items, hard to find in France they were made in small quantities for the Reibel MAC 31 LMG that used mainly 150 rounds circular mags.
They are definitely too cumbersome on a 49-56!

If you've got a 7.62x51 converted rifle, they can easily be modified to feed from a FAL metric magazine.

Thanks for the info I'll keep an eye out for the mags it sure does look combersome.
20 rnd mags appear to be a good choice your tip on welding 2 mags mags together look like the easiest option. I only have 2 mags so I need a few more to play with

Vaarok
The MAS 49/56 is 7.5 I have a fal metric mag & I slid it in the rifle the dimentions fit it appears like it would be a lot of work to modify the mag to match up with the hold open I will live with the original mags for now I'm looking for something easy which does not look like their are any easy options.

Lastdefender
It sure would be heavy to lug around

I have 2 of the FAL modified mags for my .308 49/56 that I picked up a few years ago. They fit but I will have to mess with them to improve the function end. And yet another winter project for the list .
