7.62x54r chamber insert to shoot 7.62x25?

#1 Post by FamilyFirearms » Fri Jun 30, 2017 9:31 pm

We went and bought a large collection of guns and ammo this week and while digging through tons (I mean tons) of stuff, I came across a chamber insert. It is 7.62x54r and will shoot 7.62x25. Yes I know there is no real savings on ammo but do they work? Are they safe?

I was curious as we do sometimes have younger people shoot these rifles and we have a lot of both calibers of ammo in house.

I think generally inserts are considered not safe. The risk of them being extracted without knowing is too high...unless made permanent somehow

The chamber insert that you speak of was very popular when 7.62x25 was dirt cheap. There was a member on a forum that used his for rabbit hunting with his Mosin. Your rifle. Is pretty much a single shot with it.
There were others that bought them for their kid so that they could shoot Mosins without recoil.
I was going to get one but put it off, I was spending money on guns. By the time I was ready to order one the price on 7.62x25 went crazy.
I need to look them up again and get me one.

These inserts are single shot sub-caliber units MADE to be ejected. These allow you to shoot a pistol round in a high power rifle as the insert is the dimension of the rifle round but chambered for the pistol round. Eject the unit when fired and replace the pistol empty with a new round then you can put it in the rifle and shoot again. Not very accurate and clumsy to reload quickly, but cute.

I have one, and fired approximately 50 rounds through it. As others have commented, it was a good idea when 7.62X25 was dirt cheap, but you can now shoot 7.62X54R for the same price. If you must have a lower power round for a Mosin-like rifle, it might be more cost effective to buy a WZ48 .22 trainer.

I have most of the inserts that were made for the surplus rifles to shoot pistol caliber or M-1 Carbine ammo out of a rifle. They work very well at ranges out to 100 yards even in .32 ACP. While very slow to reload the 7.62x25 insert, it can be hard to remove the fired case and requires a rod to knock the cases out of the insert.

I have the insert for Mosins in .32 ACP. It is a good way to check functionality.

Sparly these Inserts are safe.
If you want cheap and low recoil. Make Light reloads in 54R. 150g cast bullet and 12 g of Trail boss. Lighter then a 22.
You want ever cheaper? Reload in 7.62 x 25.
Aint nothing you cant fix with five gallons of diesel and a match.

Thanks everyone! I guess I will keep it as I have a crap ton of 7.62x25 ammo. I bought a bunch of the Romanian when it was $99 a can as I have a few gun that shoot it. The very first C&R handgun was a CZ52 which I still have and like to shoot. If for some reason I decide to bust out the reloader the wife bought me 5 years, I can reload new production the wife sells at the shows.
