Maybe a stupid newbie question: we've all heard the advice to check headspace, but what can be done if if there's a problem? What can even a "competent gunsmith" do? It's not like there's a headspace adjustment screw. I suppose there could be a range of bolt heads available, but they seem to come as one-size fits all.

So, what's the deal?

Bolts for Mosins are quite cheap. Order a bolt from ebay for instance and try that one. If it works sell yours on the internet....usually changing bolts can solve the problem. It is good to check and keep it safe though.

Headspace is determined by how far the barrel is threaded into the receiver.

well, the "bolt body" has nothing to do with headspace unless its totaly worn out, swap bolt guides(cheap but small gains if any) or swap bolt heads (more money, plus delicate extracor swap but larger posible gains)

peace

i should say this applies to mosins only as each kind of rifle has different things you can play with(mausers are the bolt body, enfields are bolt head only etc)
