Part 1 – Finishing Rhineland Arms Custom Stocks = http://www.surplusrifleforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=128159

Part 2 – DIY Trigger Job = http://www.surplusrifleforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=130787

Part 3 – Cryo the Barrel = http://www.surplusrifleforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=130788

All I have to show for now are the finished stocks. All pieces got 8-coats of hand-rubbed tung oil/wiping oil finish, in low gloss satin tone. In reality, and distorted through a camera, the stock finish mimics the low gloss sheen seen on mil-surps. But what I was going for was the depth of finish as seen on custom Win model 70 pre-64 rifles … no SHINY gloss like Remingtons or … hack, hack, hack … Browning rifles made within the past 20-30-years. When people saw 'gloss coats' from my in-process pictures, gloss on the 1st few hand-rubbed coats give depth, then the top-coats are low gloss for protection.

Admittedly the aqua-fortis (AF) finish is NOT for everybody, but I like working with wood and its good practice for other custom grade A+++ tiger maple wood projects I have planned. The stripes came out jet black on the forend and buttstock, which is what I had really, really wanted. The background has a medium red tone over a darker ‘mahogany’ brown.

What is COOL is that AF brings out the natural 'chatoyance' in highly figured maple, so as you turn the piece in the light, the light and dark stripes seem to move and change colors. It really has to be seen in natural sunlight to be appreciated. The wood just looks alive and then the dark stripes just POP into your view! Maybe I'll try a You Tube video ... who knows ...

Here's some from the post-rebuild. Also note that all internal action parts were also diamond-honed. I have 3 scopes to try on this:

-Kalinka POSP Pro 8X fixed, 1/2-minute adjustments, 80+ minutes of elevation, on low Kalinka BP-02 mount

-Rom 3-9X variable on side-offset mount

-US-made old (believed to be L&S) proven 8-32X duplex on same BP-02 mount

Part 5 will be test firing. Right now I did not glass-bed the buttstock or forends, but they will be. I may do some test-firing before and after, for kicks and perhaps some useful info.

Part 6 will report on the glass-bedding and show some experiments/results with harmonic dampers. Oh well, having fun anyway

I like it :D ... now THAT would most certainly turn some heads at the range! Truth is, I would rather the grouping and my shooting be the stimulus for any possible rifle envy ...

I like the longer upper hand guard. Makes the rile look much better. But I I prefer the org butterfly. I guess I just prefer the svd look..
But I to look forward to reading how the cryogenic barrel does.

I'm also interested to see how it turns out. It looks great so far, but the results of accurizing are really going to be intriguing!
