Shellac Touch Up Job

Post by Phantom 778 »

After a 200 round range session, I came home and discovered a few dings on my SKS's stock. Yes it was just a couple of spots here and there but it really stuck out at me. I decided to go down to the Home Depot and purchase some Shellac in the "Amber" color. After a few coats were applied over the course of countless q-tips, the touch up job came out flawless!!

Thanks for posting how you touched up your stock. I have a Russian SKS and the finish is flaking is some spots.

And if you need a darker color, you mix in some Permatex, Indian Head Shellac Gasket compound. The good old stuff, and old trade secret to darken or thicken the amber shellac.
To old to fight and to old to run, a Jar head will just shoot and be done with you.

If you get a flaked off spot, the Shellac can be thinned with denatured alcohol and the layer built up as you just did.
Since Shellac dries so fast a hobby air-brush can also be used to spray a thin layer than can be coated every ten minutes to bring the surface up and level with the rest of the firearms Shellac surface.

Haha, yes, a quart was the smallest size I could find locally. Some things are just worth it though 👍

Try Ace Hardware, that's is where I found a pint can.
