Well, the board is either fixed, or it's going to run terribly. Cross your fingers and hope for the best. I'm at my technical limit right now.

French 8mm ordnance

#1 Post by lamontagne0527 » Tue Mar 05, 2019 3:55 pm

Potentially looking to reload 8mm french ordnance for the 1892 revolver. What was the original bullet weight? I'm reading 120gr but fiocchi is selling theirs with 111gr so the sights would likely be off. Any tips on bullet weights since I'll be casting? Brass will be trimmed 32-20

Accurate Molds has 2 designs, one 110 gr, and one 120, I think. I have the 110, and a friend has the 120. Both seem to work equally well.

What's a good powder charge with hp-38 or trail boss? Somewhere in the 3-3.5 grains on 120gr?

I've never used HP38 or Titegroup in it. I just checked on the last box I loaded, it was 2.6 gr Bullseye. My bullet is 110 gr. I started with loads for the .32 S&W, and worked up a little. I figured that's safe, since both the case capacity and bore diameter is larger than the S&W cartridge, which would result in lower pressures for the 8MM for the same charge. I don't have a chronograph, so I don't know the velocity.

I used Graf's .330" FMJ 110 grain bullets with 3.7 grains of Unique. Its amazing they have FMJ handgun bullets for this caliber. I believe Unique mimics the powder the French used. Good to see somebody found a mould for it.

Mark

What's the cartridge overall length when loaded? Hard to find the max lengths and everything like that. I am trimming to 27.2mm from 32-20. Anyone have the usual dimensions to measure in order to load?

Check the French pistol section for more information. I have two threads there with some information you could use. I do know that 27.2mm is 1.07 inches. This too is found in the French pistol section.

Mark

Any chance red dot would be a good powder? Or is that a terrible powder to use?

I think I read on Gunboards where Unique is very close to the original French military powder. I have shot at least 20 rounds successfully with 3.7 grains of it. I think the original load was more like 3.9, but I wanted to be safe. I have never used Red Dot before, so I don't know. I also use Unique for some cast bullet rifle loads.

Best Regards,

Mark
