powder for 7.5 swiss and 30-06

Post by KySwiss »

Although I have not posted under this name, I did change it last week when I had to resign up.

However, I have a K31 and a new Savage 30-06. I have been reloading the K31 with H4831, but it seems that this powder is a little on the slow burner side for 30-06, although it will work. I was wondering what you might suggest for a powder that would work well in both, or should I just keep two separate powders, one for each????
Thanks.

I find IMR 4064 suitable for all the milsurp battle rifle cartridges. It is a very good powder in 30-06. In many of my 7.5x55 loads too.

IMR-4831 is an outstanding powder for either caliber giving you exceptional long range accuracy with 175 grain bullets.

Since they are both .308 calibers, I have already been reloading the K31 using 165grains and thought about using 150 for the 30.06. However, I am still listening, learning and decideing if I want to do that, or maybe go lighter on the 7.5 and heavier with the 30.06.

Advice always appreciated.
Thanks.

A Ruger #1.30-06 is my go to hunting rifle, and the K31 is my rifle of choice for most vintage surplus matches, so I want to get the absolute best out of both of them.

IMR 4064 has been my go to for .30-06 for many many years and gives me MOA groups with the Ruger and 150 gr ballistic tips.

When I started loading for the K-31 I tried several powders, including IMR 4064, H4895, H414 and IMR 3031. 3031 gave me the best accuracy of all. I use 44.5 grains behind a Hornady 155 gr. AMAX and it has done right well for me in matches. In looking at my notes from back when I was working on finding a target load, 4064 wasn't bad, but 3031 was better.

It all depends I guess, on what is important to you. That last little bit of accuracy, or being able to stock just one powder.

The above of course is in my individual rifles, and as always YMMV.

IMHO 4831 is at its best in rounds like the 6.5x55 or 7mm mag.

I believe the Swiss GP11 was loaded with Reloader 17.

I use H 4350 in my K31 although I really don't reload many rounds for the 30-06 it will work for it . I also use it in my Mannlicher Schoenauer 6.5x54 MS with good results . My 338-06 absolutely loves it with a 215 Sierra Gameking bullet .

I have used 4064 and BL-C(2) for all my swiss rifles with good results. However the edge goes to 4064.

I use Varget and a 165-grain Sierra GameKing, but have used other powder/bullet combinations. All shoot pretty well.
