Rolling Tire Pistol Target version II

Post by Rapidrob »

20 years ago I made a rolling target launcher that worked well but time was hard on it. The NM weather dry rotted the wood.
Yesterday I made a new one out of 1x8 x 12' planks, a hinge and a trip rod/rope. This time I used a Trap Door release device which is 100% dependable to let the tire roll down the trough It is 12 feet long and seven feet high.
I drug it out to our range today to have the members of my club try it out. The launcher only takes ten minutes to set it up and bolt the legs in place.
A tire target is placed in the trough at the top of the launcher
It worked perfectly as I hoped it would.
The released tire rolls about 25 yards and is a real fun target to shoot at with pistols/revolvers. The target is an old tire carcass with heavy card board stuffed into the wheel opening and a bulls eye target stapled to it. If I mount the paper target off-center it is very difficult to hit.
We held an impromptu pistol match today and everyone had fun trying to hit the target. After a few runs the club members got pretty good at hitting the bulls eye target.
I ended up winning by hitting it six/six times in the scoring rings using my CZ-27 pistol. I was lucky today.
Here's a photo of the tire rolling device.

When using light caliber rounds do you need to worry about ricochets when the rounds hit the thicker parts of the tire

Sounds fun. Curious - what distance was the group shooting the target at? and what was your approx. lead on it?

Shooters are ten yards away. No lead needed just don't stop your swing. The bullet is moving far faster than the target is rolling.
There is a START and STOP marker for the shooters safe fire zone.

I was using my .32 ACP reloads and a cast bullet moving at 1,200 FPS. It's almost like cheating.
