Anther one from my small ww1 collection..
I found it in one wine cellar in the my friends house.
Assault knife was officially named Il pugnale per reparti assaltatori Mod.1916 or short dagger for Arditi assault troops.
This dagger or fighting knife /assault knife Mod 1916, the first type. The blade has 173 mm. The blade is somewhere between 2/3 length sharpened on both sides. The handle with a simple narrow guard is 100 mm long. Wood on the handle twice rivets. Unlike AO knife M17 has a handle finished with flat heads which further protects the wood against damage from impact (in the head) or falls.
The knife is actually the first third of the blade of an old long bayonet Vetterli Mod. 70/87. Even scabbard is made of a cut part of the old one and at the end below twice riveted.
The other major part of the blade was used for substitute bayonets for the Veterli rifle or for the Carcano M91 rifles.
