My son and I bought a pair of 300 Weatherby magnum Vanguards on sale at Walmart. really didn't need another rifle and its overkill here in Florida but couldn't resist the price - way under wholesale.

The mount and rings Weatherby lists for the Vanguard is by Talley, aluminum alloy. But the 300 Wby mag is notoriously hard kicking (I'm reloading, modestly) and I'm a bit leery of anything but steel.

I've heard someone had problems fitting Leupold mounts, others say that any Remington 700 mount will work.

Any recommendations?

Have a Vanguard with Leupold mounts & rings, 3-9 VX-2, works fine and is plenty sturdy. 300 Wby Mag is a great caliber, possibly Weatherby's most versatile, but it's hardly a 375 H&H or anything.

Scope mounts made for the Remington 700 will fit the Weatherby Vanguard with no modifications needed. I have used Leupold, Weaver and Redfield bases on the Vanguard in the past.

Leupold Turn-in bases and QRW/PRW bases work.

Go with the Leupold bases and rings and get a good scope. Those 300 WM will shake a lesser quality scope to pieces. You are right about it being over kill for anything around Florida unless you are shooting at it at around 500 yards or so. Remember to use Federal 215 primers to set off all that powder and even on deer do not use any bullet lighter than 165 gr. The 150's vaporize when they hit a deer. The 180 Nosler ballistic tips work well on deer from the 300 WM.

A friend and I mounted a scope on a Vanguard in .300 Win Mag for his son to use elk hunting.

Take it from me, you want to loctite the screws in the base.

I usually epoxy bed my bases regardless of caliber. It is worth the minimal effort.

Decided to go with Burris universal mounts (not the double dovetail) and Signature rings with the plastic inserts, medium height.
Ordered Nikon Team Primos 3-9x40 scopes, mainly on price and a decent reputation. Same glass as the Golden Monarch, fully multicoated, everything proof, BDC reticule - kinda like a mil dot but not as intrusive - and lifetime warranty. Most everyone seems to like Nikons, even the cheaper ones, and the introductory price was VERY low, saw it in a local store for $359, only paid $219 each. It did require talking my son out of buying a $50 Barska - he's an even bigger cheapskate than I am.
I'll post the results when we try everything out.
