I hear the Checkmate mags are the best. I've had great luck with the Korean made mags for about half the price.

I've been shooting M1A's with a group of guys for over 40 years now. We all bought Korean war/early Vietnam era vintage mags, new in the wrap, for $5 apiece back in the early '70's when the market was awash in them but nobody much wanted them at that time. We are all in agreement that these mags are the benchmark, the gold standard of reliability/function. Very hard to find them now in unused/new-in-the-wrap condition. Last ones I saw on eBay went for over $100 each.

Checkmate mags have mixed reviews. I also agree that Korean mags (and Thermold synthetic mags) also work pretty good but again, neither is as good as the original ones, at least in our collective humble opinions.

All those vintage mags were stamped with the manufacturer's code on the rear of the mag. There are always seem to be questions as to how to decipher the coding so here is the list, in case you stumble across some of the original mags:

BRW made by Borg-Warner
BRW S-1 made by Borg-Warner
HR made by Harrington and Richardson
H-R made by Harrington and Richardson
HR-R made by Harrington and Richardson
KMT (A stylized logo with large K and the "M" and T" tucked in around the "K") made by Kileen Machine and Tool Company
M made by ? Possibly mis-marked magazines made by Winchester (inverted M???)
OM made by Winchester (Back when it was part of Olin-Matheson.)
SA made by Springfield Armory (The original government arsenal, not the commercial firm that now uses the name.)
TRW made by Thompson Ramo Woolridge
UHC made by Union Hardware Company
W made by Winchester
WRA made by Winchester

Hope this helps...

I've got a new 10 round Springfield mag that I'm never going to use. No gun or plans for one. Has the Crest. Prolly the same type that came with your rig. You can have it for 10 bucks shipped if you want it. PAX

you. need to try several brands of magazines. The M14/M1A is very magazine sensitive.Find out which magazine works the best for accuracy and mark it for your rifle and sell the rest.

CMI Check Mate Industries is the standard. They mfg the SAI and never heard a complaint. I know you are a new member at the M14 Forum..so that is the best place to check.

Just found 2 new BRW S-1 mags in the bunker. Do they really bring $100+? I know I have about 5-6 more of different makers. Am I going to have to keep mags in a safe now. I have 4-20rd CMI mags that I shoot with and have been 100% good for me.

Are yours new, 1960's dated, in the original packaging as opposed to a re-pack with a later date? If so then, yeah, you can probably get $100 apiece for those.

And, if they really are new, it's my opinion that you would be remiss NOT to keep them in your safe, considering how little space they will take up.

Wow. I love niw stuff.
I don't have an M14 or an M1A that takes detactabke mags. Though my 1998 cmp M1 Garand is marked M1A on the heel of the reciever. As well as an "A" after the serial number. Thats how tgey shipped it to me.
Interesting story.

And while i don't have one i still track parts and prices jus in cas .
I found a good source for new checkmate made mags last year.
44mag.com
Their prices on new mags beat all others.
I just checked their page and sadly the online store is closed. Tgat said they did post their address , so i guess they are still in business. I snagged those details in case anyone wants them.
So here you go : 44Mag Distributing LLC, PO Box 3321, Brookings, OR 97415 44mag@44mag.com

Charles,

Unfortunately 44 mag is shutting down. They were a great source for magazines for years. I bought several CMI mags from them.

Here is my M1A with CMI mag

I have an M1A Loaded also. Both CMI and Springfield mags run well for me. They look different, but no ftf’s from either that I can remember.
