I decided I needed a com-bloc weapon with a com-bloc scope after one of my friends let me play with his Romanian PSL. I've had a 91/30 laying around that I had been trying out scout type optics on, so I ordered the ATI scope mount and bolt kit, and a POSP MD6 Pro scope from Kalinka. The ATI mount went on easily and is surprisingly sturdy, and the bolt handle works very well, but I welded it on instead of the usual screw-on. I ordered the last POSP scope with Weaver type mounts that Kalinka had as I didn't really like the lateral bulk associated with the side-rail types. I finally got everything put together and fitted up and headed out to the range today. The only 7.62x54r ammunition I had laying around was some yellow-tip heavy ball.

The optics are awesome! The clarity of the 6x42 POSP is excellent, certainly on par with the nicer Nikon's and Leupold's I've looked through. The side turrets are clearly indexed and allowed me to walk the bullets right to where I wanted them. The rifle functioned perfectly, and I'm really looking forward to tuning on her some more (First off, the trigger is horrible!).

Here is a picture of the gun and a nice Finn capture Mosin that I just picked up. Shot a few just to verify function, but hopefully she'll end up a shooter too!

i also ordered the ATI scope mount kit. But to my dismay, my father drill the holes offset, and a third one trying to correct the problem. So now we have a (once) beautifull M44 mosin, Shiny blonde stock, excellent blueing, but wait whats that? three holes with epoxy filled in. O well, i think i will have him weld on the bolt, after so many shooting, it comes loose.

i would buy an original PU scope, but the dang things are 300 dollars.

$300 smackers is easy when you consider mounting a repro ZF39 on a K98k for $500.

...And $200 is even easier when you get a POSP for your Mosin :)

Well, I made it out to the range with the POSP-scoped Mosin today. I finally got the trigger to where I want it (4-5lbs, with next to no creep), and bedded the action in the stock, so I was hoping for some good results....Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. I officially have a long range shot gun! Ok, so it wasn't that bad, but at 150 yards I was averaging around 8" groups shooting both Hungarian heavy ball and some Czech light ball. I tried pulling the hand guard off, but that didn't seem to help any either. I guess it's time to slug the bore! Any other suggestions? (The bore appears perfect, by the way).

Amen to that! Repro zf39's scopes alone are more than 300... Almost makes it not worth it......Almost...

make sure your mount and rings are tight try floating the barrel slug the bore and if possible go with some nice hand loads on my 303 the difference between .311 and .312 bullets is pretty stunning

Slug the bore. I will be willing to bet that you need .312 bullets. I have a 91/30 "shotgun" as you call it when shooting surplus ammo or any .311 diameter bullets. When I slugged the bore the first time I dropped a .315 lead muzzle loader ball in the chamber end and tapped it through and out the muzzle end. It measured .3105 which a .311 bullet should be perfect but like I said it shoots all over the place. The rifle has a perfect looking bore in it so I knew something was fishy. I slugged the bore again but this time I noticed that about 3 or 4 inches from the muzzle end I had a little resistance taping the slug through. It came out just like the first slug .3105. I then dropped another ball in the chamber end and only tapped it half way down the bore and then back out the chamber end. That slug measured .311 . THis rifle has a tight spot at the muzzle end. I switched to a 174 gr Hornady .312 diameter bullet and the first 5 shot group shot out of the rifle with open sights at 100 yards measured under 1 inch and the first 4 shots were in a ragged hole about the size of a 45 bullet hole. I had done the non-Bubba accuracy tuning on this rifle. Here is THE LOAD that I have found that really shoots in every 7.62X54R that I have and that is 7 different examples.
50 grs Accurate 4350, CCI 200 primer, Graf/Prvi case, .311 174 gr. Sierra Match King or 180 SP OAL 3.000 and for rifles that need .312 bullets use the .312 Hornady 174 gr RNSP OAL 2.790 and this is important to accuracy. Use a Lee Factory Crimp Die on all loads.

I have not found a really supper accurate load for 150 gr bullets. All my rifles seem to want heavy bullets to really shoot.

1Shot,
The only really accurate load I've found for the Hornady .312 diameter 150 grain flat base spire point bullet is 43.5 grains of Alliant's Reloader-15. This load was brought to my attention by another member here as being from Lyman's 48th edition reloading manual. I tried it and it worked to bring my M44 into the under 1" category at 50 yards, and it will keep them all completely in the 2" bull of a standard 100 yard sight in target at 100 yards. Your mileage will most certainly vary, but you might try it.

The accuaracy load I found for the .311, 174 grain Sierra MatchKing was also from the same manual (I wasn't able to find any 4350 in Wichita as it's been sold out for quite a while) was 42.0 grains of Hodgdon's Varget. I did have a goodly supply of Varget already on hand. My 91/30 will group 1/2" or better at 100 yards with that load.

The 91/30's bore slugs right at .3105 and shoots well with the .311's and surplus ammo. (I'm going to try your method and see if it's really .3105 all the way through.) My M44 slugs at .3110 and it really likes the .312 bullets better. I need to try it with some .312 diameter 174 grain boolits if I can find them.

Try different ammo. Try using Winchester 203 Gr SP from big 5. It is pricey but mine loves to shoot it. Also just try different types of ammo, my 91/30 hates Czech but my M38 loves it.

I am going to mic the round I buy from Big 5 too see if they are .312 or close to it. My Mosin is very accurate with it, but is a shotgun with most of everything else.
