So I know this has been something that has been hashed out before but I am not finding what I am looking for. So I know the shellac the refurb finish but is shellac or oil a proper finish for a Mosin battle rifle. I was going to redo a stock, I have done two other in shellac but was thinking about an oil finsih and wanted to know its historical correctness.

The correct answer is YES!

Both finishes are correct.

Unless you are from the crowd that feels that the Man we contacted right at the TULA plant in RUSSIA was lying.

I must have missed this post. Sounds interesting. Could someone drop a link to it?

Seems to depend on what source, what battle and what person in the USA you ask. And if you read the Tula workers post he notes model "1891" which could be interpreted several ways in terms of rifle models and dates of use.
For me., it's kinda like asking a current GM worker what paint type and color schemes they used on a 1932 Buick. He may know or have access to that data or he may tell you what he thinks he knows.., accurate or not. Now if he has manuals or formulas to share it may be a different matter.

Sounds like both finishes may have been used but oil seems to be a very small minority if specimen rifles are used as evidence. I dunno..., but you can use whatever you want . :thumb:
