How to repair the crack on the side of the action

The side of the action is just about the thinest part of a stock. Any damage in this area has to be fixed or the stock could end up coming apart on you.
In this post I will show you how to repair and reinforce the area.

For this post our Victim will be a 03A3. This is just one of the repairs that this stock needed.
First off the stock needs to be cleaned. I did an Alcohol scrub with 0000 steel wool and Denatured Alcohol.

After the stock was cleaned, you can see where the Alcohol is still in the crack.

On the inside you can see that there is a little bit of wood missing.

I use a dremel tool and cut along the crack and then remove wood from both sides of the crack. Be careful not to cut all the way through the stock.

Next I mixed up some Acraglas and filled the channel that I cut. I then flexed the crack to work the resin into the crack. I then cut two strips of fiberglass cloth and placed them over the channel and add a little more resin on top of the cloth.
Make sure that you remove any air bubbles.

This is an easy area to clamp. Just wrap two scrap pieces of wood with some wax paper, place one on top and one on the bottom and clamp with a C clamp.

Allow the resin to cure then remove the clamp and dress up the repair.

I used a dremel with a milling bit and files to recut the inside of the action area.

I used a file to dress up the outside of the stock.

Allow the resin to cure for 24 hours before you apply your finish.

I hope that this helps out a few of you and if you have any question, just ask.

Thanks 72USMC. I've filled those in and renamed the post. I may be working from home for a few weeks thanks to this Covid-19 thing so will look into the other posts as well. :)

Glad to see you are back, for some reason all the older posts you reconstructed at the beginning of the new rebirth of the forum have missing photos. It will be great if they can be restored. I was attempting to rebuild a few of the greats because I thought you were gone. Lots of the early photos are missing & showing:

It is best if photos are posted with the forum method (limit of 5 per reply) so they stay as a resource, too many secondary photo hosts' photos seem to disappear.
