I was at a gun shop this morning and found a 1889 Brescia. The tag said it was chambered for the 6.5 round and looks like it feeds like a regular Carcano with the 6 round strippers that drop out the bottom of the mag when they are empty. The stock is in great condition, with some small damage, with several cartouches. Looks like it has an arsenal repair around the mag. Could anyone give me any information on these rifles and the average price (this one was priced at $180)? Also would this rifle be safe to shoot at all (the tag said "display only")? Could someone also post pics of one or post a website where I can find pictures of one. Thanks for any help.

Noting at that website. I actually found one at

http://www.gunsamerica.com/guns/976720362.htm

Its listed as a Model 1870/87/16 and the one I saw was marked 1889. But I found out that they were converted to 6.5 before or during WW1 so the Italians would have enough rifles. Are these rifles rare and collectible? Does anyone own one of these rifles? I also forgot to add that its missing the cleaning rod and the most forward sling swivel.

I can't remember where I read it, but I read an article on one of the converted Vetterli rifles.

The author shot his, but hand loaded it for lower pressure rounds.

I don't know too much about these rifles to say yes or no, but a competent gunsmith should be able to help you out.

I was doing some research tonight and found a forum that said they were safe, and accurate, to shoot and another that said they were unsafe :? . I guess I'd have to run it by a gunsmith. Are low pressure 6.5 loads available on the market? What is a Vetterli-Vitali? I don't handload and would have to buy ammo. But if I can't shoot it I probably won't buy it. Does anyone know a good website for Italian Vetterlis other than http://www.swissrifles.com?
