SOG Southern Ohio Guns is history

#1 Post by 72 usmc » Wed Dec 05, 2018 5:21 pm

SOG, Southern Ohio Guns is history. Web site is terminated. The Second golden age of cheep ammo and surplus rifles is ending. Some of my best pallets full of ammo deals came from SOG. SOG started up in 1981 and back in they day had tons of goodies. 1981-2018

Another sad note is illness of owner at Springfield Sporters parts. Also closed & maybe will reopen??
Does anyone have any updates on this?

I had bought many "kits" from them, as well as receivers and ten years ago, 50,000 rounds of South African 7.62x51mm ammo. ( a full two ton pallet for the club)
It is very sad to hear they are now history.
Now lets see what happens to AIM and Centerfire Systems.

There is also the demise of the old Samco Global company of the mid 1980s. If i remember correctly it opened around 1981-82 and closed in 2016. Sacco was the one that cornered the market on the Persian Mausers around 1999-2003. Both mint & used examples.

Also gone is Pat Burns and all of those Finnish Mosins they cornered the market on-- another one gone. I think some of the Burn's inventory was sold to Classic a few years ago when they had a sell off of Finns at crazy prices. Hog man Ben showing off some Finns in 2015/2016.

They had a crappy selection when I last checked them I knew something was up. As for AIM, they will do fine since they have their own line of quality AR parts.

I dealt with SOG for a long time and it was all good. AIM is my new SOG, they treat me very well and have a lot of stuff that I'm interested in.

I think they were badly managed, though, in the area of customer service. I saw a lot of bad comments from people who complained that they got a cold shoulder on the phone lines.

It seems AIM is adapting with the times, offering a lot of modern new production items with surplus thrown in when it comes avaliable

AIM seems alive and well and has storefront hours. No better place to get PRVI ammo.

Best Regards,

I'm sorry to hear that. They always treated me good. I bought a lot of stuff from them over the years, even picked up 2 SKS "paratroopers" back in October of this year. I kinda figured they were going under because the pickings got sparse at the end and it was a lot of odds and ends on sale at real good prices.

In the day say early 1990s they had some great stuff. But it was always a roll of the dice to see what would get sent out unless you paid the extra $10 for a select. Then that sometimes was the best out of what was in the storage rack ready to go out that week. But early on- 1985-1995 the surplus was a better quality.

I posted this on Survivors:
"As sad as it is, it's no loss to me as they would not do business with Kali, having been burned big somehow by the Kali DOJ.
I'm sure ignoring 10 million POTENTIAL customers didn't help (which I understand), besides milsurp drying up.
I try not to wish "I hope they go tits up" when I see "NO SALES TO CALIFORNIA", but in the back of my mind I do.
At least 7 good shops have rolled up their tent in the last couple years, in my neck of the woods. PAX"

It's like what happened to the Army/Navy "SURPLUS" stores. Not much surplus anymore, mostly Chinese knock offs. PAX

I was tracking prices for parts in case i bought a restoration project , which I did a Remington model 1917.
Then S Sporters site went down. I was checking in case it was just a glitch. But then I saw the updates.
Sadly one mentioned that people were less than sympathetic to his near death.
He posted an email address for questions so I wrote him a get well note. Then another in October after I scored the Remington and inquired what the future of Springfield Sporters looked like.
He wrote back it would probably be in the spring or summer of 2019 but that it likely would Not be in Pennsylvania
I didn't press for more details. I just wished him well.
