Well, the board is either fixed, or it's going to run terribly. Cross your fingers and hope for the best. I'm at my technical limit right now.

BM-59 or M14?

#1 Post by m47dragon » Fri Mar 01, 2019 10:04 am

Apparently, I paid in too much federal income tax. Silly me. So, I'm considering either a JRA M14 or JRA BM-59. I've never fired either rifle but I own and shoot an M1 Garand so I am somewhat familiar with them. For those who have the knowledge to make an apples to apples comparison, which would you prefer? There's a decent price difference between the two, but I'm interested to know first-hand experience in terms of accuracy (without optics,) magazine reliability, overall maintenance and reliability, balance, etc.

Thank you in advance.

No experience with either, but chose to go with build route on a BM59. Bought a parts kit and barrel and waiting on a field grade Garand, then sending over to Shuff's.

If I had the cash I would go with an M1A1, while James River Armory has a forged receiver, also consider Fulton, they seem to provide better customer service. I would go with a National match in original configuration. Either JRA or Fulton armory NM service rifle. The M14 is a nice killing machine we had in the USMC. I loved that rifle. But you are up past $3400, a true high roller

To old to fight and to old to run, a Jar head will just shoot and be done with you.

First, Semper Fi😉. Second, I was just reading that same post about the Fiochi ammo. Thanks for the good info👍 With your input and some other information gleaned I think the M14 is the way to go.

If you break a BM59 part in ten years, what do you do then? Go with the M1A

My .02...

1- Cool factor (always have to weigh the cool factor)... In 5 years when the BM59's have dried up and you show up with one at the range...SERIOUS PROPS for having a rifle 99% of shooters don't even know exists.
2 - The BM59 really didn't have any of the issues the M14 had. The BM59 served quite satisfactorily for decades, while the M14 got the boot in just 7 years. Now to be fair, and good deal of that had to do with Springfield Armory (government arsenal, not today's "Springfield Armory"), but make no mistake about it, the rifle had some real issues as well.
3 - If you find you don't like the BM59, you'll be able to sell it at any time and get an M14. Springfield isn't discontinuing the M1A anytime soon, that's for sure.
