3 would indicate Ulyanovsk Machinery Plant, but it could be something else.

This is a great page that has pretty much (well, I think all of them) every German 7.92x57 and x33 headstamp.... plus a bunch of codes for the K98.

Municion.org has lots of headstamps. It's in Spanish but if you click on Fuego Central on the left side you can select centerfire pistol & rifle cartridges to view. Escopeta are shotshells, Anular are rimfire, Piston Interno are internal primer cartridges, LeFauchex/Espiqa are pinfires, Sin Vaina y Cohetes are caseless ammo, Otros sistemas are experimental cartridges, Subcalibre/auxiliar are sub-caliber rounds (training), Lanza Morteros are mortars, and Estopines de Artilleria are artillery firing cartridges.

I'm going to scan as many different headstamps as I can tonight. The code pages are nice, but having a picture is great.

7.62x54R:

VPT=Lapuan Patruunatehdas, Lapua, Finland

8mm:

BPD=Bombrini Parodi Delfino, Rome, Italy
ENK=Greek Powder and Cartridge Co., Athens, Greece
MM=? Unsure, may be Musgrave Manufacturers and Distributors (Pty) Ltd, P O Box 183, Bloemfontein, Republic of South Africa
Odd for those years though, South Africa should have been using .303 British...but it's quite possible that 8mm Mausers could have been used by home guard and auxilliary forces. Apparently Muskgrave imported ammo at one point from Hirtenberger, possibly others. *shrugs* Dunno for certain.

Speaking of 7.62x54R.......

http://www.7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinAmmo.htm
http://mosinnagant.net/i3tro4.asp
That should save us some work.

:mrgreen:

& I believe the 2nd 8mm from the top (in the post above Zeliard's) is Greek.

I have a bunch of mid 30s 8mm JS also. It's cool to actually see the headstamp after reading that site.
I will be uploading some pics during the course of the night.
